“There Has to Be a Morning After Pill” Spoilers Below:

Things that happened

So Logan slept with Madison. Apparently the sons of convicted killers can get girls without even trying which, honestly, makes me a little jealous. He just lays around and looks sad and girls flock to him. Meanwhile, I have to be all witty.

Veronica takes this whole Madison thing very very badly, and her and Logan break-up, seemingly for good this time. In the afermath, Logan wallows, drinks and leaves Veronica a rambling voice mail where he first accuses her of expecting perfection of everyone and then sweetly professes her love to her. Too bad Veronica only listened to the first part. She also goes kind of crazy, follows Madison around town, and hires Janitor Weevil to steal the rich girl’s new car and crush it into a cube. Not with his bare hands, mind you — with a machine!

But in the end Veronica calls off the crushing. Why would she do a thing like that? Well, therein lies a tale. A tale of mystery. Because, you see, Bonnie, the girl we last saw dating Lucky Tim the TA and making out with Dick Casablancas, got pregnant, but then lost the baby when someone slipped her some RU-486. She’s kind of sad about the whole miscarriage and hires Veronica to find out whodunnit.

Turns out it’s Bonnie’s roommate, in a reveal that all came together in the last five minutes of the episode. It kind of felt like they just ran out of time, honestly. But whatever — Veronica overhears Bonnie’s preacher dad telling Bonnie not to act out of anger toward her baby-killing roommate, and the whole thing is very inspiring and, hence, no cube.

In ongoing Who-Killed-Dean-O’Dell land, Keith is still on the case. But since Veronica was investigating Tim as part of the baby-killing mystery, she learns a thing or two too. Namely that some kid named Anthony Martin overheard the gunshot the night of the supposed suicide. He is a pretty useless kid, though, and seems to just want to sleep with Veronica. Keith also confirms that somehow the Dean and his wife DID switch cars the night of his death. And, also, Steve, Mindy’s ex who didn’t want to donate his bone marrow to save his son’s life in that one episode, is back, and doing meth! He’s kind of crazy and man I bet we haven’t seen the last of him.

Things that were good

  • We got some movement on the big mystery this week, which is something I was looking for after last week gave us almost nothing. I still have no idea who might have done it, but that’s generally the case with the big mysteries on this show.
  • As much as I kind of hate the fact that Logan and Veronica have broken up again, his character is never better than when he’s being angsty and pining from Veronica.
  • It was nice to see Weevil almost be a badass again. He’s still looking pretty chubby, though.
  • Keith’s fake names at the printing company were very funny!
  • Richard Greico is really good at playing crazy as Steve.

Things that were not so good

  • Like I said above, the episode’s mystery felt like it was wrapped up way too quickly. There was no great level of satisfaction, and it all sort of felt like background noise.
  • They went where I was hoping they wouldn’t with Veronica and Logan, and I just don’t get why. Is it that hard to write couples that are actually, you know, happy on TV?
  • Missing in action: Wallace, Mac, Parker, Piz. I like to think they’re off having adventures of their own while all this is going on. But they’re probably just sitting around waiting for Veronica to ask them for favours.

Worth watching if…

Not the best episode this week, but there was still a bunch of bright spots. I do think the show is suffering because they’re clearly intentionally scaling back on the continuity and character callbacks that made this show so much fun during the last two seasons. But the writing and the characters are still so strong that it’s hard to fault them for wanting more viewers.
