30 Rock: Season 2, Episode 1

Spoilers for “Seinfeld Vision” below:
Things that happened
Jerry Seinfeld makes his highly advertised appearance in the season premiere of 30 Rock. Jack came up with this brilliant plan of putting digitized images of Jerry Seinfeld into all of NBC’s shows. This plan is only third in brilliance to MILF Island a new NBC reality show, and the list of ways to get rid of Jerry should Seinfeld Vision go badly. (Liz seducing Seinfeld is only #70.)
Jerry, as it turns out, is not in Europe and obvilious to this plan, but in the the US and shows up at the office pissed. In the end, it all works out because Jack puts his amazing negotiation skills to work and convinces Jerry that his appearance on “Law and Order” is a good idea (for one night only).
In other news, Tracy’s wife left him and he hires Kenneth to be his office wife. Kenneth does a pretty good job in this new role, getting upset over such things as throw pillows and trips to Bath and Beyond. Also, Jenna did not get fired during summer hiatus, but she did get fat.
Liz is not over Floyd the Flower Guy. This results in her buying a wedding dress on sale (40% off!) and wearing it around for most of the episode, just to prove she isn’t crazy.
Things that were good
- I don’t care how fucked up Alec Baldwin’s life is, he is so good as Jack Donaghy, I love him anyway.
- Jerry Seinfeld! As Jerry Seinfeld! How could this be bad?!
- The pizza song was surprisingly catchy.
- Holy crap Tina Fey looks good.
- I’m glad to see they kept Jenna around. I just hope they do more with her character.
Things that were not so good
- The crazy single woman buying a wedding dress is tired and cliche. For the most part, it worked, but I would have liked to see something more original from Fey.
- I did not enjoy Fey’s impression of Seinfeld. In theory, I love it. In practice, it was painful. But I struggle with awkward things.
- Kenneth could have been far better used in Jerry Seinfeld’s scenes other than the fan who is so star-struck they can’t speak. Imagine — Kenneth giving Jerry a tour instead of Liz. Comedy gold.
Worth Watching if…
All in all, this was a strong premiere episode. Even though the Office and 30 Rock are different types of comedy, I still like to compare them. As far as premiere episodes go, 30 Rock might live up to it’s Emmy win. I’m definitely going to stick around and see how this season develops.

It was a representative, funny, and well-handled half-hour of comedy from the series. It doesn’t reach the heights of say, “Hard Ball,” because it’s bogged down in covering all of the show’s plots, but it was a good introduction to the show for any Seinfeld fans searching for a new comedy.

you’re right myles. it wasn’t the best episode ever but it was solid. and after the disaterous office premiere, i was not expecting much from this show.
also — i’m really enjoying this earl in jail plot on that other thursday show. i was expecting that to suck as well (i like to prepare for disappointment) but overall, so far, it’s working. i bet it will get tired soon (as will jim and pam being all cute and happy) but for now i like it.
i also need to get back into recapping groove. i am so rusty.
